New Wave Design

After a year on the course, being exposed to graphic design daily that has increased my appreciation for graphic design and design in general. Understanding the role of typography and how creatively a designer can use it has developed is my appreciation for experimental type design and layout. It shows the designer's understanding of the modernist rules for type layout and bending it to create visually attractive new perspective of type despite its "uglyness". Examples such as the magazine, 032C and artwork done by this designer below.

Talking with Simon, he identified this as New Wave design and there was encouragement to bend the brief to suit your own interests to produce better solutions. However as much as this an interest, it is a trend and therefore temporary design. Despite this, there have been articles been written about New Wave design. Essays for example "The cult of the ugly" by Steven Heller which is regarded as the catalyst for its exposure. Extending this idea further, I asked about how this could be a possibility for a CoP area to base the essay's content. Wolfgang Weingart was suggested to research as he is regarded to be the pioneer of New Wave design.
