Leeds Art Gallery

Rebranding Leeds Art Gallery is one of the few possible ideas the practical side of CoP could take. The current branding for Leeds Art Gallery is ineffective in communicating a contemporary look for the gallery and attracting a younger audience. A modern rebrand would be appropriate because of the gallery's modern interior and the contemporary artwork it displays. Furthermore it comes at a time where they are carrying out essential repairs to the original roof of the historic Victorian building, therefore they are consciously making the effort to keep the gallery up to date. The rebrand would could also help improve the city's bid for The European Capital of Culture.

The current branding is identifiable through its unique shade of green which unfortunately creates a stagnant look for the gallery, leaving flat first impressions upon seeing the building. The sans serif typeface does reflect a modern look for the gallery however the use and choice of the typography is conventional and does not produce the same effect as other galleries who effectively use sans serif typography as their branding, e.g The Hepworth in Wakefield. The rebrand presents an opportunity to inject some excitement or to refine the current branding to effectively communicate a more contemporary look for the gallery, both through an "ugly design" approach.

The use of triangles could be a possible art direction as it is associated with the Yorkshire Sculpture  and is already evident in the Art Gallery's current branding (highlighted in yellow). The triangle can be a motif that creates cohesion between the overarching brand and the gallery itself. It must be said however that each venue of the Triangle has its own unique branding therefore to have cohesion between the two may not be entirely ideal.
